“Many residents would remember the original Limbang Shopping Centre, which first opened almost 30 years ago. It was built around the same time as the Limbang estate, and had a distinctive design inspired by our peranakan shophouses.

Back then, the only nearby alternative was Lot One and Yew Tee Square. But these were some distance away. And that is why Limbang Shopping Centre, with its wet market, food court, and shops, has been an important fixture in our community – a place where you can get everyday necessities, located close to home.”

Our Limbang Shopping Centre was officially reopened by our Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MP Mr Lawrence Wong on 3 February 2024. Did you get a chance to take a look at the rejuvenuated neighbourhood centre (NC)?

Located between Yew Tee and Choa Chu Kang MRT stations, the refreshed Limbang Shopping Centre boasts enhanced amenities, more retail offerings, expanded F&B options and improved accessibility for residents. This marks the latest completion among seven HDB NCs upgraded in the last four years.

This redevelopment, incorporating feedback from residents and tenants during the planning stage, includes improvements such as wider escalators, addition of seating areas as well as a sheltered playground. The mall also features ‘Instagrammable’ spaces, colourful murals, and nostalgic Peranakan-themed interiors.

We brought the supermarket, wet market and food court closer together – all on level 1 now – to make it more convenient for residents. To encourage more community activities, we have a new community plaza for events.

“We have 50% more shops now, including a bigger NTUC Fairprice with a wider selection of groceries and household items. Many have also asked for more food options. So we have more than doubled the number of F&B options.

Apart from that, in terms of design, it has a new, fresh modern look. High ceiling, big ceiling fan, and new skylight – so the place is bright and airy (…) Yet at the same time, it retained some of the elements of the original building, to help preserve the memories many residents have of this place.”

The award evaluates a building’s overall environmental performance, and Limbang Shopping Centre clinched the award thanks to its sustainable design with the use of natural ventilation and renewable energy sources like solar panels.

The low energy consumption design has also made Limbang Shopping Centre the first non-residential building to receive the 2022 BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy (SLE) Certification.

Residents in Choa Chu Kang now have more retail options and community hangout spots with a revamped heartland mall designed to better meet their needs.

“HDB living will always be a key part of our Singaporean story. I am confident that if we continue to work together, there remain many exciting things that we can do.

So let’s all do our part, working hand in hand, to build a better Singapore, and to make this truly a place we will always be proud to call home.”
